Seven Days of Pure Science

Posted on January 26th, 2007

A blogosphere initiative.

I'm happy to report that I've signed up to the Week of Science initiative from Just Science. What's that? To quote the proposing blog post:

...we would like to propose a Week of Science, to begin on Monday, February 5, and end on Sunday, February 11. During that time each blogger should post about science only, with at least one post per day. Furthermore, issues which are favored by anti-scientific groups (creationism, global warming, etc.) should be either avoided, or discussed without reference to anti-scientific positions.

So what are the topics I'm going to be talking about? I have three ideas; in no particular order:

  • What is parental genetic testing? That is, what is the science behind identifying biological parents?
  • The science of information retrieval, which is the technical field of how search engines work.
  • Epigenetics. An overview and some examples. I'm really looking forward to this one!

Post below with your suggestions, and check out the list of participating blogs.

I think in some ways this is a great idea, but I’m not going to participate in the expected way…

I’ve made more extensive comments here:

While I understand where this idea is coming from, I also think it leaves something to be desired. I fully support bloggers such as yourself doing this, and I’ll make that support tangible (see my post) but I will be following a slightly different course!

Interesting post Greg - I think your point is very valid. I have two reasons I signed up:

    1. It’ll be great fun, and will kick me to post more here. That’s the most important reason.

    2. I’m so tired of seeing the same subjects come up daily. I mean, come on, what ever happened to stem cells and other hot topics. Let’s ignore the political agendas for a minute (week) and tell the world that there is more to science than just what’s in the news these days.

And yes, stem cells are on the list now. Three more ideas to go :)

    Pierre,

I am not going to take the part of the pledge where I lay low, but I am still very interested in the fact that Darwin Day is coming up. So I’m using this as an opportunity to write Darwin Posts throughout the period. I’ve already started working on them.
